Like a squirrel gathering nuts, I seek inspirational nuggets wherever I can find them. The quote above was offered recently by one of our teacher trainees at the beginning of a session. It made me catch my breath. These words rang so true because no matter what we look like or how much we have achieved, we still face the inner critic of not being enough. This is what compelled me to open our first studio in Speedway more than 6 years ago. I wanted to create a refuge where each of us could come and realize that yes, we are enough.
How is 2020 shaping up for you? We are already approaching the end of January! How are things looking for you?
Like you, I had the greatest intentions for this new decade. Now, as we begin to move into February, I find that I struggle to stay on track with my personal and professional goals. There are diversions, internal chatter and self-doubt (does that ever end?), unexpected responsibilities, and then a host of other things that have edged their way up the list of what I thought were my priorities.
All is not lost, I assure you and myself. The more I practice yoga, the more I believe in the potency of the tools yoga offers to help me evolve into the best version of myself. Breathing exercises, meditation, mindfulness in daily actions, being present with the people and world around me, taking better care of myself and yes, coming to the mat, have all become as much a part of me as my arms and legs.
I share this to encourage you to embrace more of what yoga can offer you. My wish for you is that at what is still and early juncture in our new year, you are learning to appreciate how much your yoga practice can enrich your life. Walking into class or on your mat at home and going deeper into yourself as you move through your practice is how it all begins. This is how we discover that we are our own friend.
I hope 2020 is your year of self love and acceptance.
